Others go to great lengths to pamper their cats, sometimes treating them as if they were children. It is no coincidence that cats are also "clean" animals; the chemistry of their saliva, expended during their frequent grooming, appears to be a natural deodorant. Being closely related to desert animals, cats can easily withstand the heat and cold of a temperate climate, but not for extended periods. For a cat at rest, the average heart rate should be between 150 and 180 bpm, about twice that of a human. A domestic cat's normal heart rate ranges from 140 to 220 beats per minute (bpm), and is largely dependent on how excited the cat is.

The cat moves towards the animal it wants to hunt, keeping its body flat and near the ground so that it cannot be seen easily. The basic cat coat colouring, tabby (see top photo), makes it easy for the cat to hide in grass and woodland. Cats are active carnivores, meaning that in the wild they hunt live animals. Cats which are not specific breeds can be referred to as 'domestic shorthair' (DSH) or 'domestic longhair' (DLH).
Another possibility is that presenting the kill might be a relic of a kitten feline behavior of demonstrating, for its mother's approval, that it has developed the necessary skill for hunting. It is probably related to hunting instincts, including the common cat practice of kittens hunting their mother's and each other's tails. This "righting reflex" is a natural instinct and is found even in newborn kittens (Siegal 2004). Sexually active males will usually be in many fights during their lives, and often have decidedly battered faces with obvious scars and cuts to the ears and nose.
These standards are usually drafted by breeders involved in establishing or promoting the breed and are approved by cat associations. The cat is also a familiar figure in nursery rhymes, stories, and popular entertainment. (According to legend, maneki-neko was not a black cat; she was a calico.) Maneki-neko (“beckoning cat”) figurines, usually portrayed with one raised paw, are especially common in Japan. For example, in many Western countries, a black cat is considered bad luck, though the same cat in Japan is considered an omen of good fortune.

What is TICA?

Cats eat a wide variety of animals, including insects such as flies and grasshoppers. As females have two X chromosomes, they can have two or more colours. Cats started becoming pets when the ancient Egyptians were around. They are one of the most popular pets in the world. All images are the property of their respective owners. Cats age faster during the first 2 years of life.
Certain species appear more susceptible than others; in one English village, for example, 30% of house sparrow mortality was linked to the domestic cat. Purring may have developed as an evolutionary advantage as a signaling mechanism of reassurance between mother cats and nursing kittens, who are thought to use it as a care-soliciting signal. Domestic cats' scent rubbing behavior toward humans or other cats is thought to be a feline means of social bonding. Captive Leopardus cats may also display affectionate behavior toward humans but are not domesticated. Wildcats of Egypt contributed to the maternal gene pool of the domestic cat at a later time. Out of the estimated 600 million domestic cats worldwide, 400 million reside in Asia, including 58 million in China.
- Because of an ancient mutation, however, domestic cats are prone to polydactyly, and may have six or seven toes.
- An analysis of the domestic cat genome revealed that the ancestral wildcat genome was significantly altered in the process of domestication, as specific mutations were selected to develop cat breeds.
- Even though the cat is a relatively small animal, it can frighten enemies by arching its back and bristling.
- In strict terms, a purebred cat is one whose ancestry contains only individuals of the same breed.
- Founded in 1990, Alley Cat Allies is the leading advocacy organization for cats with a mission to transform and develop communities to protect and improve the lives of all cats and kittens.
- This keeps the claws sharp by preventing wear from contact with the ground and allows for the silent stalking of prey.

It allows them to sense certain aromas in a way that humans cannot. Cats have an acute sense of smell, due in part to their well-developed olfactory bulb and a large surface of olfactory mucosa, about 5.8 cm2 (0.90 in2) in area, which is about twice that of humans. Its hearing sensitivity is enhanced by its large movable outer ears, the pinnae, which amplify sounds and help detect the location of a noise. It can hear a range of 10.5 octaves, compared to about 9 octaves for humans and dogs. It can detect an extremely broad range of frequencies ranging from 55 Hz to 79 kHz, whereas humans can only detect frequencies between 20 Hz and 20 kHz. At low light, a cat's pupils expand to cover most of the exposed surface of its eyes.

The gestation of queens lasts between 64 and 67 days, with an average of 65 days. Because ovulation is not always triggered by a single mating, females may not be impregnated by the first male with which they mate. After about 20 to 30 minutes, once the female is finished grooming, the cycle will repeat. If a male attempts to mate with her at this point, the female attacks him.
Most of the cat’s weight is centered on the front paws while walking. Typically, cats walk or run by moving the front and back legs on each side together. The average weight of a healthy cat varies from 6 to 12 pounds (2.7 to 5.44 kg). But male cats with their one X chromosome can be either orange or black but not both.
